Thread Ring Gages Instrument Information
“Thread ring gages are essential for precise threading and are vital in applications that require exact dimensional accuracy. At Fox Valley Metrology, we offer ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration for all types of thread ring gages, ensuring full NIST traceability and dependable measurement accuracy.
Our expert technicians handle each calibration manually, providing the utmost attention to detail.
Every thread ring gage calibration includes a meticulous inspection of both pitch diameter and minor diameter to ensure all critical dimensions are within tolerance.
Our standard thread ring calibration process is completed through one of two methods:
- Thread Setting Plug Method: A thread setting plug is inserted into the thread ring. If the plug fits too loosely or too tightly in the ring, we perform adjustments to meet the correct specifications.
- Two-Ball Method: For thread ring gages without a setting plug, we employ the two-ball method, allowing us to calibrate accurately without a reference plug.

What is a Thread Ring?
A metallic ring machined to a precise diameter and threaded to a precise size. The gage is screwed onto the internal thread of a machined part. The gage often comes in a Go/No-Go set. Often, the machined part is considered in tolerance if the Go end goes onto the threaded part smoothly and the No-Go end engages, but does not thread over three complete turns.
Common Thread Ring Uses
Verifying external threads on machined parts, such as bolts and screws, meet dimensions and tolerances for mating with internally threaded parts.
Common Thread Plug Classes
UN Series Thread Rings:
• UNC – Coarse pitch series
• UNF – Fine pitch series
• UNEF – Extra fine pitch series
• UNJ – Constant pitch series, with rounded root on external threads & thread ring gage
• UNJC – Coarse pitch series, rounded root on external threads & thread ring gage
• UNS – Special diameter, pitch or length of engagement
• UNJF – Fine pitch series, rounded root on external threads & thread ring gage
• UNJEF – Extra fine pitch series, rounded root on external threads & thread ring gage
Metric Thread Rings:
•M – Basic thread profile as specified in ISO 68
•MJ – MJ profile with round root on external threads and thread ring gage
•MJS – MJ profile special series on external threads and thread ring gage
