Thread Ring Gages Instrument Information

“Thread ring gages are essential for precise threading and are vital in applications that require exact dimensional accuracy. At Fox Valley Metrology, we offer ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration for all types of thread ring gages, ensuring full NIST traceability and dependable measurement accuracy.

Our expert technicians handle each calibration manually, providing the utmost attention to detail.

Every thread ring gage calibration includes a meticulous inspection of both pitch diameter and minor diameter to ensure all critical dimensions are within tolerance.

Our standard thread ring calibration process is completed through one of two methods:

  1. Thread Setting Plug Method: A thread setting plug is inserted into the thread ring. If the plug fits too loosely or too tightly in the ring, we perform adjustments to meet the correct specifications.
  2. Two-Ball Method: For thread ring gages without a setting plug, we employ the two-ball method, allowing us to calibrate accurately without a reference plug.

Fox Valley Metrology’s ISO/IEC 17025 Accredited Thread Ring Gage Calibration Services Include:
    • UN Series Thread Ring Calibration
    • Metric Thread Ring Calibration
    • BSPT Thread Ring Calibration
    • NPT Thread Ring Calibration
    • NPTF Thread Ring Calibration
    • BSPP Thread Ring Calibration
    • ACME Thread Ring Calibration
    • Buttress Thread Ring Calibration
    • Go Thread Ring Calibration
    • No-Go Thread Ring Calibration

With our tailored calibration processes, you can be confident that your thread ring gages deliver consistent and accurate measurements, supporting quality and precision in your threaded components.

thread ring

What is a Thread Ring?

A metallic ring machined to a precise diameter and threaded to a precise size. The gage is screwed onto the internal thread of a machined part. The gage often comes in a Go/No-Go set. Often, the machined part is considered in tolerance if the Go end goes onto the threaded part smoothly and the No-Go end engages, but does not thread over three complete turns.

Common Thread Ring Uses

Verifying external threads on machined parts, such as bolts and screws, meet dimensions and tolerances for mating with internally threaded parts.

Common Thread Plug Classes

UN Series Thread Rings:
• UNC – Coarse pitch series
• UNF – Fine pitch series
• UNEF – Extra fine pitch series
• UNJ – Constant pitch series, with rounded root on external threads & thread ring gage
• UNJC – Coarse pitch series, rounded root on external threads & thread ring gage
• UNS – Special diameter, pitch or length of engagement
• UNJF – Fine pitch series, rounded root on external threads & thread ring gage
• UNJEF – Extra fine pitch series, rounded root on external threads & thread ring gage

Metric Thread Rings:
•M – Basic thread profile as specified in ISO 68
•MJ – MJ profile with round root on external threads and thread ring gage
•MJS – MJ profile special series on external threads and thread ring gage

Why is thread ring gage calibration necessary?

Over time, wear and tear, environmental conditions and other factors impact the calibration of thread ring gages. Proper thread ring gage calibration verifies the accuracy of a ring gage by comparing its readings to an established thread ring gage standard, typically a thread setting plug.

How often is thread ring gage calibration needed?

The frequency of thread ring gage calibration depends on how much the thread ring gage is used and in what environments. It is often recommended as little as once per year or every few months, depending on the circumstances.

Why is thread ring gage calibration important?

Thread ring gage calibration is key to ensuring thread rings are accurate. In Doing so, you can ensure the components the thread plug is inspecting will have connections that fit snugly and properly.

What is the process for calibrating a thread ring gage?

The most common thread ring calibration method is by utilizing a thread setting plug. The thread ring is carefully threaded onto the thread set plug by hand, checking for the snugness of the fit.

How long does thread ring calibration take?

You can expect an average 3-5 day turnaround for our thread ring calibration service, with faster expedite options offered if needed.

What is the cost of thread ring calibration?

The cost to have your thread ring calibrated can vary based on the size of the ring, its pitch diameter and the series of the ring (UN, Metric, BSPP, etc.). To get an exact quote, please reach out today.

Can I calibrate thread rings myself?

In-house calibration is possible with the right equipment and expertise, but professional calibration services are recommended for high precision and traceability back to a national standard.

How can I tell if my thread ring needs calibration?

If you can see visible wear on the threads, calibration is necessary. Additionally, if the thread ring is dropped, it should be calibrated (even if damage is not visible).

Is your thread ring calibration ISO 17025 accredited?

Yes. We provide ISO 17025 accredited thread ring calibrations on all calibrations.

Is your thread ring calibration traceable to national standards?

Yes. We NIST traceable thread ring calibrations on all calibrations.
