Calipers Instrument Information

With calipers being one of the most versatile and widely used inspection tools they are certainly the “bread and butter” of Fox Valley Metrology’s accredited calibration services. With this frequent use, it is very normal for calipers to fall out of calibration over time. Whether you are using digital, dial or vernier calipers, we can provide accredited calibration services near you with full NIST traceability.

Our technicians calibrate all calipers with the utmost focus on precision across the full measurement range. While we can accommodate any unique measurement request our standard caliper calibration process includes inspection of:

  • Outside Diameter (OD) Jaws
  • Inside Diameter (ID) Jaws
  • Depth Rod
  • Step Measurement

…along with parallelism inspection of both the ID and OD jaws.
We take readings at numerous points over the full range of the caliper, from 0.375” to the largest measurement the caliper is capable of.

Fox Valley Metrology’s ISO/IEC 17025 accredited caliper calibration service offerings include:

  • Dial Caliper Calibration
  • Digital Caliper Calibration
  • Vernier Caliper Calibration

What is a Caliper?

A caliper is a precision measurement tool with jaws used to measure the dimensions of an object. It is commonly used in industries such as machining, engineering, and manufacturing to obtain highly accurate measurements.

Common Caliper Uses

  • Quick measurement of nearly all of a machined part’s dimensions, such as:
  • Confirming the length, width or height of a machined component
  • Measuring the diameter of shafts or holes
  • Checking the thickness of materials
  • Verifying dimensions during manufacturing processes
  • Inspecting the dimensions of mechanical components

Why is caliper calibration important?

Caliper calibration is necessary to ensure accuracy. Whether using vernier calipers, digital calipers or dial calipers, instruments out of calibration can lead to safety and quality issues.

How often is caliper calibration needed?

The frequency of caliper calibration depends on how often the calipers are used and in what conditions. It is often recommended to calibrate calipers once per year or, in situations of heavy use, every three to six months.

Also, if the jaws are closed and the caliper is not reading zero, it is a telltale sign that the caliper is out of tolerance.

Using caliper calibration blocks, can I perform my own caliper calibration?

You could, but when considering caliper calibration in an accredited ISO 17025 setting, it is often a more economical option to opt for caliper calibration services, like those provided by Fox Valley Metrology.

What is the process for calibrating a caliper?

Caliper calibration involves comparing its measurements to a known standard (such as a gage block), across the full range of the caliper, including all its measurement functions. These include the outside diameter jaws, the inside diameter jaws, its depth rod and step measurement. Parallelism of the jaws are also inspected. If the caliper is found out of tolerance, as is often the case after heavy use, adjustment of the tool may be needed.

How much does caliper calibration cost?

Costs vary based on the type of caliper, the overall length and the features on the caliper. Reach out to get a quote from us today.

What happens if I use an uncalibrated caliper?

An uncalibrated caliper can give inaccurate measurements, potentially leading to poor quality control, rework, and compliance issues.

How long does caliper calibration take?

Our standard caliper calibration turnaround generally takes 3-5 days, with expedited service options available.

How can I tell if my caliper needs calibration?

The most notable sign of a caliper needing calibration is when the jaws are closed and the caliper does no read zero. Other signs include inconsistent measurements, visible wear, or if it hasn’t been calibrated within the recommended timeframe.

Is your caliper calibration ISO 17025 accredited?

Yes. We provide ISO 17025 accredited caliper calibrations on all calibrations.

Is your caliper calibration traceable to national standards?

Yes. We NIST traceable caliper calibrations on all calibrations.
