Q Meter Instrument Information
An electronic device which measures the quality factor of a radio frequency (RF) circuit (the amount of energy dissipated per cycle in a non-ideal reactive circuit). The meter contains a tuneable RF generator with a very low impedance output and a very high impedance input. A precise capacitance is applied to the circuit and the voltage developed across the system is measured by the detector. Comparing the ratio of the developed RF voltage to the applied RF current, along with the known reactive impedance, determines the Q factor. Q meters have largely been replaced by other instruments.
