Film Thickness Gage Instrument Information
An electronic device used to measure the thickness of a wall or a coating on a manufactured part without requiring access to both sides of the test piece. It contains a transducer connected to base unit, which contains the microprocessor and display. The tester operates by measuring the amount of time it takes for a sound wave (ultrasonic) to travel from the transducer, through the part and back. The base unit then calculates the thickness based on the time between the events. The tester must be calibrated before each use to the type and shape of material being measured.

Common Uses
- Determining the thickness of a manufactured part, where access to the other side is limited or non-existent for something such as a caliper to reach it in metals, plastics, glass and other common materials.
- Measuring wall thickness of a pipe or tube.
- Measuring film thickness of painted or coated part.
Common Types
- Transducer Type (Piezoelectric, EMAT)
